A traumatic brain injury is a serious condition that requires immediate medical attention. Concussions are the most common type of traumatic brain injury. Some brain injuries can permanently change the way you live your life. You may have heard that some of the symptoms of traumatic brain injury are dizziness, nausea, headaches, and moodiness.
However, TBI is also capable of causing lifelong complications. Some victims suffer chronic pain for the rest of their lives. Others have slurred speech or difficulty reading or understanding the spoken word.
Below is a list of other symptoms that can last a lifetime:
- Problems sensing temperature or touch
- A partial or total loss of vision
- Difficulty judging distances
- Lost or diminished sense of smell
- Epilepsy
- An increased risk for mental diseases like Alzheimer’s
- Chronic depression
- Irritability
- Drastic and spontaneous changes in personality or behavior
Traumatic brain injury can also cause varying degrees of amnesia where a victim may have trouble remembering certain or all aspects of his or her life. Additionally, some traumatic brain injuries leave victims unconscious for long periods of time. And sadly, some victims of TBI do not survive this injury.
Still, many fail to realize the ripple effect a traumatic brain injury has on the lives of everyone who knows the victim. Families who live with someone who suffers a traumatic brain injury often undergo tremendous emotional distress. The victim and his or her family deserve fair compensation for medical costs, lost income, and pain and suffering.
