The Most Common Types of Medical Malpractice

Even as technologies improve, medical malpractice remains a problem.  In fact, a study conducted for the Harvard Medical School concluded that a very low percentage of actual instances of medical malpractice result in a claim.  Thousands of people every year go to their doctor or hospital seeking medical attention, and become the victims of negligence and incompetence. When doctors and health care practitioners breach their duties as professionals they should be held accountable for their actions. Here are some of the most common types of medical malpractice:

  • Mistakes made during diagnosis. This is one of the most serious types of medical malpractice. Conditions such as heart attacks, cancer, and diabetes must be diagnosed properly and in a timely manner. When a patient is misdiagnosed or given a delayed diagnosis it can lead to further health complications.
  • Anesthesia mistakes. If anesthesia is not administered properly, it can lead to brain damage and even death.
  • Surgical errors. Although some surgeries are complicated and involve inherent risks, other times mistakes are made when they could easily be avoided.
  • Child birth errors. Mistakes are often made during difficult childbirths when vacuums and forceps are used to assist the baby through the birth canal. This can lead to nerve damage and conditions such as cerebral palsy.
  • Prescription drug errors. Medication errors can occur at pharmacies, hospitals, and even long-term care facilities. Always double-check your that prescription has been filled correctly.
