It is not common knowledge, but staph infections are one of the leading causes of death in the United States. They are contracted through contact with the bacteria staphylococcus, usually during a visit to the hospital or doctor’s office. Studies have proven that with better hygiene and more infection prevention measures taken, the risk of staph infections can be significantly reduced. But, sadly, the problem continues.
A 2007 study by the New York Times revealed that nearly 20,000 people had died as a result of staph infections that year. While the number is alarming, the article brought some much-needed attention to the problem. Because bacteria passes easily through contact and can also infiltrate small breaks in the skin, it is not easy to eliminate the problem altogether.
Recognizing staph infections
Staph infections can occur in the general public and often do. Although they tend to be less serious than when they are contracted in hospitals, they can still be dangerous. The bacteria can cause a skin infection that appears as a red bump. If it continues untreated, it may turn into an abscess with redness and pus. If you recognize any of the symptoms of a staph infection, contact a doctor immediately. Also, it is recommended that you keep all cuts covered, shower frequently and especially after exercise, and wash your hands to avoid infections.
