Be smart and avoid bicycle accidents
Biking has become more popular than ever in the U.S. According to a recent Rutgers University study, the number of bike commuters in the country rose by 64 percent between 1990 and 2009.
Unfortunately, when bikes and automobiles share the road, an accident is always a possibility. And because of the lack of protection a bike provides, such accidents can result in very serious injury to the biker. Listed below are a few safety tips that can help you stay safe when bicycling:
- Make sure you can be seen. Drivers who hit cyclists usually say, “I didn’t see him/her.” Because bikes are so much smaller than cars, many drivers don’t notice them on the road. You can greatly reduce the risk of being struck by a car by wearing bright, reflective clothing and having reflectors and lights on your bike. At night, you must have lights and reflectors, and a failure to do so will prove your own negligence if you are ever in an accident.
- Obey the traffic laws. Just like a car, bikes are expected to obey traffic rules. Do not run red lights or ride through stop signs. Also, use the proper hand signals when turning.
- Avoid dangerous situations. Be aware that most car-on-bike accidents occur at night and during rush hour when roads are busy. If you don’t ride during these times, you will greatly decrease your chances of being in an accident.
- Be safe. Always wear a helmet!
Biking is a great way to stay healthy, as well as a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly means of transportation. As long as you exercise caution and care when sharing the road, your chances of an accident are slim.
